Aside of what seemed like milking the story for suspense (the CNN "affiliate" in L.A. - KTLA - had reported that Jackson was dead for a while before CNN went live with that), their nauseating fixation on the "we have not independently" verified this information" part comes as an ostentatious display of what they believe sets them apart as "professional" and "trustworthy".
